Frequently asked questions
What does asbestos look like?
You can’t identify asbestos by sight. Only lab analysis of a sample can confirm it.
Which homes are most likely to have asbestos?
Homes and buildings built before about 1980 are the most likely, though some materials containing asbestos were used later.
Is asbestos dangerous if I leave it alone?
Intact, undamaged material that won’t be disturbed generally poses low risk. The hazard comes when it is damaged, sanded, cut or demolished and fibers become airborne.
Can I remove asbestos myself in South Carolina?
SC rules include limited situations for owners of their own residence, but disposal, notification and safety requirements still apply, and doing it wrong can expose your family. Check with SC DES before attempting any removal.
