Sprayed-on “popcorn” or acoustic ceiling texture was common in homes built from the 1950s into the 1980s, and some of it contains asbestos. You can’t tell by looking.
We test the texture first. If it’s clean, removal is a normal drywall job. If it contains asbestos, we remove it under containment, then the ceiling can be skimmed and painted — we can coordinate the refinish so you’re not left with a bare ceiling.
Don’t scrape it yourself before testing. Dry scraping is the fastest way to spread fibers through a house.

Frequently asked questions
Does all popcorn ceiling contain asbestos?
No. Many popcorn ceilings, especially newer ones, test negative. Testing is inexpensive compared to removing it as if it were positive.
Can I paint over an asbestos popcorn ceiling?
Encapsulating with paint is sometimes an option if the texture is intact and you don’t plan to disturb it. It does not remove the asbestos, and must be disclosed and dealt with before future renovation.
